How Jesus Followers Should Respond to COVID-19

Disease is one of humankinds' oldest enemies. Throughout history, outbreaks of various types have swept through populations leaving destruction in their wake. So it's no wonder that as this new virus begins to stretch across the globe, we see a corresponding surge of anxiety and fear. Although people vary in their responses from outright panic to eye-rolling mockery, what is the appropriate response of Christians when sickness hits our cities?

Wisdom, not fear

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
— 2 Timothy 1:7

This verse applies in this situation as much as in any in our lives. Fear doesn't protect us from anything and it is not God's way for His people. As Jesus questioned, "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" (Luke 12:25) Instead we should seek the power of the Holy Spirit through prayer, walk in love and not in self-preservation, and take reasonable precautions. (And maybe watch this video on how to wash your hands the right way.)

Remember the vulnerable

Throughout scripture it's clear that God expects His people to care for the vulnerable. COVID-19 would be a frustrating inconvenience for most of us, but it is truly dangerous for more vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with other health problems. Remember those who may be experiencing more fear and encourage them, pray for them, and protect them by not "soldiering on" if you have symptoms of illness. And if anyone you know goes into quarantine, looks for ways to provide practical and emotional support, as it can be isolating and financially harmful.

Preach the Gospel

Nothing dismantles our illusions of control like things outside our control. When we are forcibly reminded of our vulnerability it can be scary and painful. But as C.S. Lewis remarked,

Pain is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
— C.S. Lewis

Fear inducing events like outbreaks, war, and natural disasters present an opportunity for God's people who are ready and paying attention- because only the Gospel of Jesus Christ is big enough to speak to the pain and fear in this world. So when dark things like outbreaks hit our cities - let's be ready to shine the light of the Gospel even brighter.

Fear and paranoia can spread as quickly and ruthlessly as a virus. But when we choose the Christian response- wisdom, love, and faith - we can stop them in their tracks.
